Outback Tour 2008- Longreach to Barcaldine

We had a pretty good rest in Longreach, recovering some sanity after the tediousness of Winton. In leaving for Barcaldine, we're taking a huge risk... what level of communication will there be??? It's not far away - only 100km from Longreach - but things vary alot out here. Thankfully, the caravan park has wireless internet, which is odd for out here, but the lovely elderly couple who run the park explain that it's just one of those luxuries that is more of a necessity these days. Otherwise, Barcaldine is a nice enough place - some bastards poisoned the legendary "Tree Of Knowledge" back in 2005, the traditional birthplace of the Australian Labour Party back in 1891. It's hard to believe some idiot(s) would do something like that really. They're trying to save the parts of the tree that aren't dead, and "reconstruct" the tree in some world-first method. I don't know. There's heaps of pubs, and people seem friendly here. We met a lovely English backpacker who's really friendly and easy to get along with - actually there's quite a few backpackers in this town... Kris
